May 23, 2025 – Global – Hackers are targeting crypto users through counterfeit versions of the Ledger Live app, tricking them into revealing their 12- or 24-word seed phrases — the master keys to their digital wallets.
According to cybersecurity researchers and user reports, malicious actors have managed to sneak fake Ledger apps into multiple app stores and websites, posing as legitimate software from the popular hardware wallet provider. Once installed, these fake apps prompt users to enter their seed phrase under the guise of restoring access or syncing devices, effectively handing over control of their wallets to attackers.
Ledger, a leading manufacturer of crypto hardware wallets, has issued urgent warnings across social media, emphasizing that it never asks users to input their seed phrases online or in any app.
"If you are prompted to enter your recovery phrase on any device, website, or app outside of your Ledger device — it’s a scam," Ledger stated.
The deceptive apps have been linked to stolen funds across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and multiple ERC-20 tokens, raising serious concerns about app store vetting and Web3 security awareness. Experts warn that users must download Ledger software only from the official Ledger website and should remain highly cautious of links shared via email or social media.
Key Safety Reminders for Crypto Users:
Never share or enter your seed phrase online.
Only download wallet apps from official sources.
Enable hardware wallet verification for all transactions.
This ongoing phishing campaign highlights the persistent threats facing crypto investors, especially as adoption grows and more novice users enter the market. Ledger and other security experts are working with app stores and web hosts to takedown fake listings and track stolen assets.
